A reception and painting demonstration for St. Augustine artist Martha Ferguson will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Georgia Nick Gallery, 11A Aviles St.
Ferguson will have her easel set up for a painting demonstration and be available to answer questions.
Ferguson’s artwork is influenced by her surroundings. She seeks to capture the moment, create a feeling or rekindle a special memory. She is drawn to the subject of light, whether it be a light post or the sun rising over the Matanzas River. She has been fortunate to live in the charming towns of Ocean Grove, New Jersey and now St Augustine, FL where she finds plenty of inspiration offering me ongoing subject matter.
Ferguson studied fine art at Flagler College, and she studied watercolor, oil and printmaking at the University of Charleston. She has continued her studies at The Art Student League of New York. During her college years she was greatly influenced by Emmit Fritz, a local artist with whom she often encountered painting the scenes of St. Augustine.
Ferguson paints in both watercolor and oil. With watercolor, she uses a wet-on-wet technique on 300 lb. paper or for a more delicate look, handmade paper. Her recent works are done in oil and on location.
